Homeopathy is based on the principle of vitalism, the concept that living organisms are animated by a life-giving organizing principle, an energy at the core of the organism. This energy has different names in different cultures and modalities; in homeopathy it is known as the vital force. The vital force is responsible for all functions of the organism, both those originating within the organism and those responding to outside stimuli. From the vitalist perspective, body, mind, emotions, and spirit are all one because of their common roots in the vital force. A healthy vital force reflects and produces a state of well-being on all levels.
Homeopathy employs specially prepared natural substances to address the vital force and bring it to balance. Homeopathic remedies are safe and gentle. Their manufacture in the U.S. is supervised by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and most of them are available over the counter in health food stores, drugstores, and by mail order.
